Cosmetic Spend Up in Many States During Covid Pandemic

The Covid-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on many industries, but makeup is not one of them. According to cash-back platform Ibotta, which is tracking spending habits across the country before and during the pandemic, many states have seen a significant increase in big box store makeup purchases during the pandemic. The data here compares June-December of 2019 spending to spending in June-December of 2020.

The national average overall is down 5%, but some states saw as much as a 58% increase. In fact, Washington, D.C. showed a whopping 89% increase in spending! Here are the rankings of the states that have shown the most increase in makeup spending during the pandemic:

1 – Kansas – 58%
2 – Texas – 35%
3 – California – 25%
4 – New Mexico – 24%
5 – North Dakota – 23%
6 – Michigan – 23%
7 – Illinois – 22%
8 – Indiana – 21%
9 – Minnesota – 20%
10 – Hawaii – 17%
11 – Wisconsin – 16%
12 – Florida – 15%
13 – Montana – 15%
14 – Alabama – 15%
15 – Nebraska – 14%
16 – Nevada – 14%
17 – Arizona – 14%
18 – Missouri – 13%
19 – Oklahoma – 12%
20 – North Carolina – 10%

Vermont leads the pack with the largest decrease in spending, spending 35% less, followed by Alaska being down 34% and West Virginia down 26%. New Yorkers have spent 13% less.

Thankfully for those spending more money on makeup, Ibotta lets you save money on everyday purchases. Average users save about $20 a month using Ibotta, but many save $100+ per month using Ibotta.
