Every relationship faces challenges, no matter how perfect. However, there are challenges in long-distance relationships that might seem a little harder or at least novel, since it can difficult to find people who know and share your experiences. But there are ways to help keep that relationship strong, even if you can’t be there to add some physical affection to it.

Set a time to spend together

These days, a lot of long-distance relationships carry out in texts and IM conversations that go on throughout the whole day, checking in, sending memes, and having chats when the occasion presents itself.

However, you should make sure that you also have dedicated time to spend together, whether it’s watching movies through watch together apps, or playing online games together, or simply having a face-time date. Undistracted time with your loved one is vital.

Make the effort

If you want someone to feel cared for, then you need to invest the time in showing that feeling by making sure that you’re there with presents for the big days in their lives (birthdays, Christmas, anniversaries) which is important. Aside from choosing good gifts, you can help them feel a little more connected to you by, for instance, sending them care packages of treats that they might not be able to get where they live.

Little surprises go a long way

You don’t need a present for your partner to be a huge deal, either. It can help the relationship if you send them little physical reminders of your affection as surprises throughout the year as well. You can order flowers for them, you can write them a physical letter, you can send any number of small, but heartfelt surprises. It’s a great way to stay in their lives beyond a screen.

Involve each other in your lives

One of the issues that can hurt long-distance relationships is when they feel “separate” from the rest of your life due to the fact that you don’t have a lot of touchpoints with the rest of your life.

Introducing your partner to your friends through Zoom calls or chats, talking to them about your friends and family, and taking the time to make them a part of your life can be vital in helping that relationship group. Of course, you should expect the same as well.

The question of intimacy

Intimacy matters for a lot of people. Of course, there are some out there for whom that isn’t a big part of the package. However, sending flirty messages and pictures can be a great way to make sure that your spouse knows you’ve been thinking about them. It’s important to do only what you and your partner feel comfortable with, however, and what you feel you can trust them with.

It’s important to long-distance relationships to have some sense of building up to the moment that you’re able to be together. It might not be soon, and it might not be for a long time just yet, but until you can get there, the tips above can help.
