6 Tips For Keeping Your Dog Healthy And Happy

There are lots of things you can do to keep your dog healthy and happy. Below are just 6 of the most important things that every dog owner should do.

1. Watch what they eat

Just like humans, dogs can develop health problems from eating the wrong types of foods. There are some instantly toxic foods like chocolate and grapes that should be avoided at all costs.

There are then other foods that can cause health problems in the long run if you feed them to your dog too much such as fatty foods. Even some dog foods are relatively unhealthy – it’s worth searching around for organic dog food brands.

Make sure that the food is appropriate for your dog’s age – when searching for food for a puppy, search around for the best natural puppy food. Certain breeds may also benefit from specific types of dog food, which is something to consider.

2. Give them enough exercise

Dogs also need to be kept active to keep a healthy weight and to maintain a healthy heart. The best way to do this is to take them on walks. Certain breeds of dog may require longer walks than others (for instance, labradors need much longer walks than pugs). A walk can also be mentally stimulating for your dog, allowing them to explore a new environment and pick up new sights and smells.

3. Groom and clean your dog

If dogs aren’t groomed and cleaned they can develop problems such as lice and infections. Make sure that you’re brushing your dog and cleaning their coat when necessary.

Dogs can also benefit from having their ears occasionally cleaned and their nails occasionally clipped. You should also consider your dog’s dental health – feeding them dental chew treats or brushing their teeth with dog toothpaste can reduce the risk of tooth decay.

4. Provide toys and enjoy playtime together

A lot of dogs love to play with toys. Toys provide stimulation, helping to reduce boredom. Dogs also need playtime with their owners. This could involve playing catch, playing tug, or simply stroking them and offering attention.

5. Let your dog meet other dogs

While humans can be great company for dogs, it’s important that your pet dog also socializes with other dogs. Dogs that never socialize with their own kind can become anxious or aggressive when faced with other dogs.

This could make walking your dog more stressful for your dog and for yourself. It’s best to socialize dogs when they are young – this could simply involve meeting up with a friend that has a dog and going on a walk.

6. Go for check-ups at the vet

It can be worth going to the vet every so often to do health checks on your dog. While you may be able to detect some health problems yourself, others may not be so easy to detect. A vet can detect any problems early – often helping to make treatment easier (and less expensive!). A biannual check-up may be all that’s needed.
