Working from home can be a challenge. With more people than ever before remote working or taking a more blended approach to their working day, the need has arisen for people to find a new way of working and adapt to new environments to ensure they can get the job done.
However, freelancers have been managing this issue for many years now and have perfected the art of working remotely and productively.
Whether you are new to working from home, still getting to grips with it, or you are a seasoned professional, it pays to constantly assess how you work and what you do every day. Many different factors can affect your ability to work well. Maybe it’s quiet at home, or the traffic outside is distracting. It could be that the temptation to put the TV on is too much, and you find yourself behind before you have even started.
With many factors affecting your working routine, you must find the sweet spot that works for you. This post looks at ways to stay motivated to get the job done even if you are outside of your traditional office space.
Coworking spaces are the in-between compromise. Perfect for those who need to work remotely, whether employed or freelance. A coworking space is an office that is used by many different people across a range of industries. You hire a desk or office to work from and share the space with other people who need to do the same.
Some of the benefits of working from a coworking space include giving you that office feel, being able to socialize, and simply getting out of the house and looking at a different set of walls for a while. There are no lengthy contracts or leases to tie you in, and you can choose how long for and how often you want the space.
Create A Dedicated Work Space
Are you tempted to work from bed? It is an appealing option. After all, it is likely to be the most comfortable place in your home. But if you choose to work from bed, you run the risk of confusing your body clock, meaning you will be unable to sleep when it comes to bedtime. A poor sleep routine leads to insomnia and this, in turn, affects your overall performance.
Experts recommend you should only use your bed for sleeping.
So, even though your bed may seem like a comfortable place to work, find a different location for your workspace. The kitchen table or a desk in the living room corner would be preferable options for your workspace than the bedroom. Or even frequenting coworking spaces as mentioned above.
Get Fresh Air
A good reason why you’ve heard so many experts tout the benefits of getting outside is that it not only keeps you from sitting down all day but it also has the potential to boost your motivation levels as well.
If it is dark when you begin your working day and dark when you end your working day, you must create opportunities to get outside in the daylight whenever possible. A short walk around the block or a trip to get a takeout coffee can be sufficient to break up the day’s activities.
Whether you enjoy silence or prefer to listen to music or a podcast, make an effort to disconnect from work while you are out. One of the most beneficial things you can do for your motivation and wellbeing is to expose yourself to light, fresh air, and exercise.
Break Your Day Up
If large tasks seem daunting, breaking them down into small blocks can help you retain focus and motivation. Smaller goals are undoubtedly more attainable and motivating than feeling like you will never reach that bigger end goal.
You may find that telling yourself that you only need to reply to three emails in the next 30 minutes will provide you with more motivation than telling yourself that you have 50 emails to send by lunchtime. Setting a limit for your time will also help you to become more accountable.
When you know you only have 15 minutes to complete a task, you’ll be less likely to get distracted on social media platforms. A tight deadline will also make you less likely to procrastinate, which will help you complete your task more quickly.
Create A Schedule
Time can easily slip through your fingers if you don’t have a well-organized workday. As you sip that second cup of coffee before starting work, you may find that you begin to shift your workdays later and later in the day.
Before you know it, your working hours are extended later into the evenings. Then bedtime becomes later, you have no time to unwind and so the cycle begins again the next day.
If you feel like you are constantly working, your motivation will wane as the light at the end of the tunnel seems too far away. That is why it is critical to have a well-defined schedule. Establish a workable schedule for when work will begin and end. Make every effort to adhere to it to the best of your ability.
- Be strict about the start time of your working day.
- As you aren’t commuting, use this time to have your coffee or breakfast before heading to your desk.
- Treat your working area as your office, e.g., your living room, and take breaks in a different area.
- Take a lunch break, even 25 minutes away from your desk.
- If you find yourself hitting a wall, move away from the screen and take a few minutes to clear your head.
- Block tasks for each day, such as one hour in the morning for replying to emails, one hour for taking calls, and so on, so you aren’t pulled in too many different directions during the day.
When you’re interrupted, you might find that it’s challenging to get back on track. You can maintain your motivation by limiting the number of distractions and interruptions that you encounter.
To achieve this, you may need to turn off your phone notifications and only check your email once or twice an hour. Alternatively, you could set your phone to “Do Not Disturb” mode until you have completed a specific task.
If you’re working from home with children, it can be more challenging to find that balance and eliminate distractions. It is only natural that your children will want your attention while you are working. Try to find activities they can do independently and safely to allow you little blocks of time to work.
Establish some ground rules for what constitutes a legitimate reason for them to interrupt you while you’re working, and stick to them. Then, when you’re finished with your work, you can reward them for their excellent behavior by allowing them to do something extra fun. Of course, this is easier with older children.
Practice Self Care
You’ll never be at your best if you’re tired and dependent on caffeine and sugar to help you make it through to bedtime. To perform at your best, you need a nutritious diet, water, rest, and self-care.
Take a step back and consider how you may better care for yourself. As your stress level rises, so should your self-care. Make yourself a priority to support your physical and emotional health and wellbeing.
When it comes to finding what works for you when working from home, you will likely need to make more mistakes and try different methods until you find your groove.
