While we all want to have exquisite fingernails and in order for them to look amazing, they also need to be thick, healthy, and strong. Unfortunately, we put our nails through a lot each day which can really take its toll over time, causing them to become weak and break.

If you notice your nails starting to feel brittle, it may seem impossible to strengthen your weakened nails again and keep them strong. Thankfully, there is some good news here. Below is a list of general nail care tips and lifestyle tricks you can use as a step-by-step game plan to strengthen your nails.

1. Protect your nails

In order to ensure your nails are always as healthy as possible, you need to keep them safe from anything that might damage them. That means wearing rubber gloves to protect your hands and nails while you’re doing housework like washing dishes.

You can also try applying some moisturizing cream before slipping on your gloves as it will give your hands and nails a little extra softness while you work. Doing whatever you can to protect your nails as much as possible is ultimately one of the easiest ways to strengthen your nails.

2. Keep nails clean

While it’s important that you should always keep your nails clean, it’s just as important to make sure you’re cleaning them correctly. Because too much digging underneath your nail can cause the plate to separate too far from the skin, creating an arching nail tip that allows room for fungal infections.

Rather than using sharp metal tools to clean your nails, use a glass buffer or orange stick to create even nail edges on even the weakest and most unhealthy nails. There are some excellent nail technician courses available online if you want to learn more about strengthening your nails. Like to prevent damage or breakage when filing them, always file one direction before lifting the file to go back again. Don’t forget to disinfect any multiple-use tools after use.

3. Regularly moisturize

When your nails are dry and flaky, it’s just as bad as if it was your skin. Nails can be pretty delicate, especially when they’re weaker than they should be, they can often break very easily. So it’s a good idea to moisturize your hands and nails each night before bed, just like you do with the rest of your skin.

You can even give your nails some love during the day to really help keep them moisturized and make them strong. There’s a wide range of moisturizing oils and creams to choose from for both cuticles and for hands that will really help look shiny and healthy while also increasing their strength.

4. Go chemical-free

Unfortunately, many of your favorite polishes, acrylics, and especially removers will most likely be full of harsh and toxic chemicals which cause your nails to become dry, weak, brittle, and thin. So, you should always try to avoid any polishes, glue, removers, acrylics, and soaks which contain formaldehyde, toluene, or DBP.

If you’re anything like me and you absolutely can’t imagine life without painting your nails, try and only use non-toxic nail polishes as well as acetone-free polish removers from now on. While the alternative acetone-free formulas are gentler so they won’t strip natural oils from your nails, they can still do the job they’re supposed to do.

5. Watch what you eat

You should always consider everything that you put inside your body anyway, but especially if you want strong and healthy nails. When it comes to strengthening your nails, your diet should be rich in variety, well-balanced, and nutritious, with plenty of minerals and vitamins. and to help to keep your nails strong and healthy.

You should also increase your calcium intake and eat plenty of protein-rich foods like eggs, beans, fish, and lean meats. Finally, don’t forget to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and minimizing your alcohol consumption to strengthen your nails and keep brittleness at bay.
