Getting More Fruit and Veggies Into Your Diet

We all know that we need to eat a healthy and balanced diet to maintain a good quality of life. The food we put into our bodies is the fuel that we need to thrive, get through day-to-day activities, and generally promote our long-lasting health and wellbeing.
We have all also been told from a young age that getting plenty of fruit and vegetables in our diet is essential in this. We should get five portions of fruit and veg a day, which sounds easy enough, but so few of us actually achieve this on an ongoing basis. So, what can you do to get more fruit and veggies into your diet? Here are some suggestions that should help you to achieve this goal!
Understand Your Five a Day
It’s recommended that we get five portions of fruit and veg a day. But how does this actually work? Many people make mistakes in calculating their five a day that results in them not actually getting enough fruit and vegetables, even when they think they are.
Your five portions of fruit and veggies should each be different fruits and vegetables. You can’t eat five apples and call it a day. You need variety to get the nutrients your body needs. You should also understand how big your portion should be. Generally speaking, one portion will fill your hand. For example, one apple, one orange, one avocado, or a handful of berries, broccoli, carrots, or more.
Smoothies and Drinks
There are so many fun forms of fruit and veggies that are delicious and easy to enjoy in the form of a drink. Pick up a mango lassi, a smoothie, a freshly squeezed fruit juice, or another alternative. It is important to avoid this every day though. Fruit drinks have already released the sugar that is usually released while chewing whole fruits and vegetables, meaning they can be bad for your teeth in excess.
When we reach for snacks, many of us automatically reach for unhealthy options. Cakes, cookies, sugar-loaded cereal bars, chips, and more. But why not switch your unhealthy snacks for healthier fruit and veggies. Fruit, cucumber sticks, carrot sticks with hummus, vegetable crisps… there are so many options available there’s bound to be something you’ll enjoy.
Eating out? Order a side of vegetables with your meal. Eating at home? Cook up an extra side. Sure, this might not be something you’d usually do. But it’s an easy way to add an extra portion to your daily intake.
Of course, if there are areas you’re occasionally missing with your fruit and veggies, you can make up for these gaps with supplements.
