How to Keep Your Kids Engaged with Homeschooling

If you want to keep your kids engaged with homeschooling, then you need to make sure that you are doing everything in your power to make them feel included throughout the whole process. Ideally, you need to try and listen to them, and you also need to allow them to study when they feel as though they can do their best work. If you can do this, then you will see a huge improvement in their academic progress.

Don’t Give Up

It may seem hard at times, homeschooling your child, but you have to make sure that you do not give up. If things are not working out in your favor, then you may want to try and change up your routine a little.

Remember if you are finding it difficult, then there’s a chance that they will be finding it hard too, and this is not an efficient system for everyone. If you can make a positive change here, then you will surely be able to reap the benefits.

Choose a Pace that Suits your Child

One of the many benefits that come with homeschooling is that you can go at a pace that suits your child. If you know that your child is struggling a great deal with a certain topic, and it is becoming a bit of an issue, then maybe try and go back to the beginning and get them to work through it again.

You can also help them to gain a lot of their confidence back this way and this will work wonders for their academic ability in general.

Set up a New Timetable

You need to make sure that you set up a new timetable, but at the same time, you also need to connect it to some of your goals. Goalsetting for homeschooling is so important as it gives you the chance to increase the amount of motivation that your child has. You have to remember that not all of your goals have to be related to your child’s future.

You can simply make weekly goals if you feel as though this is more motivating for your child. If you are finding it hard to sit down and engage your child, then give them a reward at the end of the day if they do well, or even think about giving them a weekly reward. If you can do this, then you will soon see a huge improvement.

Mix it Up

This may seem very obvious, but your child will become more engaged if they feel as though the lesson is fun. If you can, you need to download worksheets online too. If you can do this, then you will soon find that you are able to engage your child through structured learning and that you are also able to add some fun elements there too.

It may be that you give them the chance to play with Lego so that they can expand their creative thinking as well as their problem-solving abilities. Either way, if you can do this, then you will soon find that you can give your child the learning environment they need and that they are happier as a result.

Create an Area for Homeschooling

This may sound rather obvious, but it is important to know that lines can get blurred over time. If you have been homeschooling for quite some time then there’s a high chance that your original area may have moved and merged quite a lot. If you are able to create a specific area for your homeschooling environment that is away from where your child relaxes and unwinds, then this will help to get them in a better mindset, and it will also help them to stay focused too.

You have to remember that your child’s mind will associate specific areas with a certain behavior very fast, and most of the time they will do this without you even realizing it. If you allow them to learn in the same place where they relax, then they may not be able to focus on their work as much, and this can reduce their overall engagement.

You may also find that this is the case if you allow them to work in the bedroom. They may begin to think about schoolwork when it’s time for bed, and they may find it harder to sleep. If you are not able to create a completely separate area for homeschooling, then try and create an area in your home where they go to study. You’ll see a huge improvement in no time.

Look After Yourself

If you show a lot of enthusiasm for your child and their learning, then this will help you out overall. Your level of encouragement and enthusiasm may well depend on how you are feeling though. If you are like a lot of parents then you may have a job, the stresses of daily life, and more.

If this is the case, then you need to cut yourself some slack. It’s normal for you to not feel the enthusiasm that you want for your child’s work but at the same time, you need to make sure that you practice self-care for yourself. If you don’t then you may find that you are not able to give them the best learning experience and that you end up feeling way more stressed than you should be.

Buddy Up

Children tend to crave social interaction. If you can get your child to do some of their work with a friend online, or if you can get them to do it via Zoom or even Skype then this will help both them and you out. Your child may love the idea of being able to do some of their work on the computer, with a friend.

They may even look forward to doing it every week too so keep this in mind. If it works for your child, then that is the only thing that matters, so focus on this rather than what other people think. Your child will be happier for it, and you will feel better because you’ll be helping your child in a way that suits them.

Find a Great Tutor

If you are concerned about the education that your child is getting, or if you feel as though maybe they need an extra boost in a certain area then private tutoring is always a good idea. It is very easy for you to find a tutor online if you want to have them study over the internet, or you can even find one in your local area if you would prefer them to come to your home.

You have to remember that your child will learn better if you show that you understand the way that they like to study. This means giving them a voice when deciding which tutor to hire, and what times to study.

So, encouraging your child to study at home can be difficult, but at the same time, homeschooling is a fantastic way for you to engage your child, and it also helps them to work at a pace that suits them. You may even find that it gives them a boost of confidence and that it also encourages them to study with some level of independence.

This can really help them in the future, not to mention that it can also give them a good foundation for when they seek a job, or when they need to study at home for college or even university.
