Career Change Masterclass for Michigan Teachers Seeking a New Profession; Begins July 9
Career Change Masterclass for Michigan Teachers Searching for New Professions Available through New MyCoach for Teachers.
Summer Virtual Coaching Program Offered by Gesher Human Services, Begins July 9.
With up to 10,000 teachers in Michigan leaving the profession annually and new research announced in April 2024 showing schools in Michigan could lose 5,100 teaching jobs in the next few years as federal pandemic aid ends, Michigan teachers ready for a career change can turn to a virtual career coaching program this summer. MyCoach for Teachers is a masterclass group of four online sessions helping teachers explore how they can utilize their many skills in a new form of employment.
The program runs from 10 a.m. to 11. 30 a.m. on July 9, 11, 16 and 18
and is offered by Gesher Human Services, one of the largest human service agencies in metro Detroit. The course fee is $50, and teachers will be given assessments to identify their skills and strengths for a new career path, take a career inventory, discuss toxic work environments and how that can impede a job search, build their confidence and gain hope for the future with their coaches. The program will also provide resume assistance, job search advice and opportunities for professional growth. For more information go to the events page at geshermi.org.
“It’s no secret that there are many teachers who feel burnt out, especially since COVID, and while there are more demands on administrators this frequently translates to added work pressures on teachers,” said career counselor Phyllis Scripsick, who will be helping to run the MyCoach for Teachers program. “We have had a number of teachers reach out to us, wanting to discover what could be next for them. With MyCoach for Teachers we can provide a sense of direction and empowerment as they explore what they want and need in uncertain times.”
The first MyCoach for Teachers was held in person in the summer of 2023
at Gesher’s headquarters in Southfield, this year it was decided that a virtual program would be easier and preferred for many participants’ busy schedules, as well as to allow teachers outside of the metro Detroit area to be included. MyCoach for Teachers is only open to teachers – both current and retired – allowing participants to find camaraderie and support from others taking part.
To register, contact Phyllis Scripsick at pscripsick@geshermi.org or call 248.233.4278.
Individual career and job search advice is also available to metro Detroiters at no cost and those interested should email employmenthelp@geshermi.org or call 248.233.4245.
