Winning Strategies for Kids and Money: Free Financial Education Webinar for Metro Detroit Children and Their Parents on July 26.
Participants, aged middle-school and up, are eligible for a $5 gift card to Dairy Queen.
Gesher Human Services, one of the largest human service agencies in metro Detroit which also provides financial education, is helping children learn how to make smart financial choices this summer. A free webinar workshop on Friday, July 26 at 1 p.m. called Winning Strategies for Kids and Money, aims to educate children, alongside their parents, about the importance of managing their money.
Young participants
will learn how to structure their allowance and other monies to understand the power of saving, budgeting, credit scores and the perils of debt, to help eliminate financial obstacles for their future. The program is part of Gesher’s Family Financial Harmony Series and is open to middle school and high school students and their parents. The importance of young people understanding their money was confirmed by a recent Michigan school mandate personal finance course requirement. Local community bankers will also be available during the program for youth wanting to open a bank account; and children who participate in the program will receive a $5 gift card to Dairy Queen. Online registration for parents and their children is available on the Gesher events page at geshermi.org or click here.
“We see so many adults with limited financial sense because they have never been taught the basics of financial literacy,” said Gesher Financial Education Manager Laltsha Cunningham said. “The recent mandate for Michigan’s high school students to take a half-credit course in personal finance is a step forward. We are just trying to reinforce financial education in our young people as often as possible so that they will be better savers and not face the financial obstacles their own families may have come across.”
In the coming years,
program participants will likely have credit cards and will also need to understand the importance of paying credit card bills each month and how that affects your credit score. This program will touch on those subjects to help make difficult financial terms easier to understand.
Cunningham added, “It really is never too early to learn about managing your money, and we hope this program will help to make these students better financial stewards of their money in the future.”
Gesher Human Services also provides one-on-one financial counseling to the community which can be scheduled by calling 248.233.4299 or email financialhelp@geshermi.org.
