You know that feeling when you walk into a room, and you just feel a little more relaxed? Or the opposite – everything feels a bit off, and you don’t really know why? As strange as it might seem, the fact is that your home can actually influence how you feel and change your mood in ways – good and bad – that you hadn’t realized.

It does make sense; we spend so much time in our spaces, whether we’re working from home, rushing through the morning routine, or just trying to unwind after a long day, and the ways those spaces are set up really does matter. With that in mind, here are some of the unexpected ways your home affects your mood.

Clutter Can Affect You

It’s amazing how quickly clutter can affect how you feel – a pile of laundry, some paperwork, just general stuff that doesn’t really have a home… before you know it, your brain is trying to work out what to do with it and that’s going to make it hard to relax. Those kinds of thoughts will even be going on in the background and you won’t be aware of them, but they’ll still make you feel uneasy.

So decluttering and tidying is the best thing to do if you want that problem to stop, and the best thing is that a space doesn’t have to be perfectly tidy, it just needs to be less full and less stressful. And even tidying just one corner or a small table or surface can help when it comes to getting started.

Light Can Change Everything

Natural light is one of those things you don’t realize you need and miss until you get more of it – it totally lifts the space, lifts your mood, and can make the day feel just that bit brighter, so it might be exactly what you need to make yourself feel better – and it’s certainly worth trying out anyway.

Even when there’s not a lot of real sunshine to work with, you can invest in soft lamps or warm bulbs to help you, so you can feel good all year round, no matter what time of day (or night) it might be. Just don’t go overboard because you don’t want to make the spaces so bright you strain your eyes

A Change Can Do You Good

If your home feels a little off no matter how many tweaks you make, it might be time to think bigger and make some other changes – it could be the layout itself that’s causing the problems and making living happily in your home harder than it needs to be.

If that’s the case, or even if you just think that it might be, the best thing to do is to speak to a professional remodeling contractor about your thoughts and what you want to happen. They’ll have some great ideas, and you’ll be able to get a budget cost so if you need to save up, you’ve got a goal to work towards.
