Midland, MI Ranks #1 in U.S. for Recovery Safety, New National Study Finds Low crime rates and strong mental health support make Midland a top city for long-term addiction recovery.
Midland, MI – May 29, 2025 – As addiction and mental health challenges continue to strain recovery systems in major cities, a new national study reveals that smaller communities like Midland, Michigan, may offer a more stable path forward. A new national study from The Haven Detox reveals Midland, Michigan as the safest U.S. city for substance abuse recovery—ranking #1 in safety and #5 overall among more than 100 metropolitan areas evaluated for addiction recovery readiness.
“Over the past decade in addiction treatment, I’ve learned that healing is more than medication or therapy,” says Dr. Rostislav Ignatov, MD, Chief Medical Officer at The Haven Detox. “It’s about helping people feel seen, valued, and part of something again. When a city shows up—not just with services, but with heart—it becomes more than a place to live. It becomes a foundation for someone to rebuild their life. That sense of connection and purpose can sometimes be just as helpful to staying well as clinical intervention.”

Smaller Cities, Bigger Impact

While addiction recovery services in major cities often dominate the conversation, a quieter shift is taking place: smaller, community-centered cities like Midland are emerging as national leaders in sustainable recovery support. As larger metros face rising crime, housing costs, and
strained mental health systems, new data suggests that tight-knit, stable communities may offer a more supportive path to recovery.
“We designed this study to find out which cities truly support long-term recovery—not just with access to treatment, but by fostering the kind of environment where recovery can last,” said Dr.Rostislav Ignatov, MD, Chief Medical Officer at The Haven Detox. “Midland stood out because it offers more than services—it offers safety, community, and opportunity. Those are the things
that helps people stay well.”
The study—shared exclusively with select media outlets ahead of public release—analyzed recovery conditions across the U.S., evaluating each metro area using a weighted index based on four critical factors:

  • Public Safety
  • Mental Health Support
  • Employment Strength
  • Affordability
Midland stood out for its exceptionally low crime rates and strong support infrastructure, creating an ideal environment for individuals in recovery.

Key Findings About Midland:

  • #1 in safety, with a score of 90.01—the highest in the nation
  • #5 overall in the U.S. for addiction recovery support
  • 56.73 in employment strength, helping individuals rebuild financial stability
  • 63.51 in mental health support, indicating strong access to behavioral health care
“Too often, people return home only to face the same instability that contributed to their addiction,” added Dr. Ignatov. “Midland shows what’s possible when housing, employment, and behavioral health systems actually work together. That’s the kind of model we need to see in more cities across the country.”

Why It Matters for Michigan

As many urban areas nationwide grapple with rising addiction rates and insufficient behavioral health infrastructure, Midland sets a compelling example of how smaller communities can succeed where larger ones struggle. The study underscores the importance of safety, access, and support networks in building effective, long-term recovery ecosystems.
