Eastern Market shop plans a Friday the 13th cocktail gathering, a Saturday celebration and a customer-photo retrospective.

Two Detroit creative businesses are celebrating a combined 30 years of doing things their own way. Cyberoptix Tie Lab marks its 20th anniversary this year manufacturing in Detroit, while its sister shop, Well Done Goods, celebrates 10 years of putting unexpected designs, offbeat gifts and Detroit-inspired objects into customers’ hands.

The celebration begins Friday, November 13,

with a public cocktail gathering at the Well Done Goods store from 6 to 9 p.m. It continues Saturday, November 14, during Eastern Market’s Saturday market day. The shop is planning a retrospective gallery wall featuring photos of customers, friends and visitors wearing its designs, along with a commemorative limited-edition object whose details have not yet been announced.

Founder Bethany Shorb opened the retail shop after a decade of working with a much smaller canvas. “I was printing on the same little tie-shaped canvas for 10 years, so it was really exciting to print on different shaped things,” she said. The storefront gave her room to expand beyond neckties and create work with a stronger Detroit focus.

Shorb draws from Detroit architecture, music, historic blueprints and documents, including images discovered at dusty junk shops and estate sales. Those influences show up on clothing, accessories and smaller keepsakes, alongside a wider mix of goods selected for the store.

The shop has also expanded its selection of lower-priced patches, magnets and postcards for visitors who want to take a little Detroit home.

The anniversary is intended as a celebration of two decades of work and the people who have worn it, not just another markdown event. “We want to show a retrospective of neckwear, jewelry and clothing being enjoyed by both local family and instantly recognizable household names,” Shorb said.

The Friday gathering is open to the public.
