The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer is the period between Memorial Day and Labor day when drivers, especially teenagers, are more at risk and likely to be involved in fatal crashes. The 100 Deadliest Days accounts for approximately 30% of all fatal motor vehicle accidents in Michigan for the entire year.
Below are statistics about the dangers that teen drivers in Michigan face during the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer between Memorial Day and Labor Day:
- In Michigan, on average, 63 teen drivers are involved in fatal crashes every year, with 23 occurring during the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer, according to AAA.
- These crashes result in an average of 68 total deaths per year, with 25 occurring during the 100 Deadliest Days (AAA)
- 35.5% of fatal crashes involving drivers 15-20 years of age and 34.8% involving drivers of all ages in Michigan in 2023 occurred during the 100 Deadliest Days (Michigan Traffic Crash Facts)
- 32% of fatal crashes involving drivers 15-20 years of age and 32.9% involving drivers of all ages in Michigan in 2022 occurred during the 100 Deadliest Days (Michigan Traffic Crash Facts)
“As the temperatures rise and more drivers hit the road, we strongly urge motorists of all ages to stay alert and aware of their surroundings,” stated Steve Gursten, Attorney and President of Michigan Auto Law. “Distractions behind the wheel are far too common, but we hope our pledge initiative, along with practical resources and tips on our website, will serve as effective tools to help prevent crashes this summer.”
Gursten added,
“The rise in fatal crashes during the summer months can be attributed to several factors such as heavier traffic, inexperienced teen drivers, late-night travel, summer vacations, road construction, and impaired driving from alcohol or drugs. Distracted driving also plays a major role, with drivers engaging in risky behaviors like texting, watching videos, using social media, and interacting with passengers while behind the wheel.”
Michigan Auto Law attorneys are strong advocates for making Michigan roads safer for motorists, motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians and for providing vital safety guidance to drivers throughout the state.
