During our latest summertime event,

local foster children in Smithfield, Virginia, experienced Christmas in July firsthand at the second annual “Kids Summer Funfest”, a vibrant community celebration hosted by the local Toys for Tots Chapter and dedicated Coordinator, Elizabeth Moose.

Held at scenic Windsor Castle Park, the event was a day to remember – complete with pony rides, water slides, hands-on activities from local police and fire departments, and the beloved Gunny Bear, who brought extra hugs and heartwarming moments to every child he met.

“At Marine Toys for Tots, we believe every child deserves to experience the magic of childhood. With help from 94 dedicated volunteers,

first responders, and civic groups, the event brought foster children a powerful reminder: they are seen, they are valued, and they are celebrated.

“Seeing the pure joy on the kids’ faces as they played, laughed, and hugged Gunny Bear made every minute of volunteering worth it,” shared one volunteer. “We created a day where these children could just be kids – and that’s priceless.”

A foster parent added, “This event gave my child a chance to shine. To feel special. To know they’re part of a larger community that truly cares. We’re so grateful.”
