Southfield, Mich. (August 2025) — Thrifters across Michigan will have plenty to celebrate this August as Volunteers of America Michigan (VOAMI) prepares for a full day of deals and festivities at all six of its thrift stores in honor of National Thrift Shop Day on Sunday, August 17, 2025. Known for high-quality secondhand finds and community impact, VOAMI is also announcing the upcoming grand opening of its newest and largest thrift location: “MI Thrift” (pronounced “My Thrift”) in Marshall, Mich. (15863 W. Michigan Ave., Marshall, Mich. 49068), opening fall 2025. This announcement comes as welcome news to Michigan consumers following recent Credit Karma research showing back-to-school expenses are causing financial strain for many parents, with half of parents worrying about affording supplies, sometimes at the cost of groceries or bills. Families can find affordable clothing and more for the upcoming school year at the metro Detroit VOAMI Thrift Store located at 34800 Warren Road, Westland, MI 48185. Proceeds from all purchases and donations will help to fund VOAMI’s vital programs in that store’s community for veterans, seniors, families, and individuals with disabilities.

“Whether you’re shopping for back-to-school clothes, furnishing a home, or simply searching for treasures, Volunteers of America Michigan thrift stores offer unbeatable value while supporting neighbors in need. It’s where purpose meets affordability,” said President and CEO of Volunteers of America Michigan Aubrey Macfarlane. “Opening our new MI Thrift store in Marshall this fall expands our continuum of services offered to this community, now supporting families who are feeling the squeeze of everyday costs, providing a space to recycle home goods and clothing, and supporting Veterans and Seniors.” Macfarlane added.

  • Color tag deals: Weekly 50% and 75% off savings
  • Free popcorn and sweets
  • Giveaways, games for the kids and prizes

VOAMI encourages shoppers to also bring their clothing and household donations, which will be accepted at all six locations throughout National Thrift Shop Day, to help stock stores and support local services.

New Marshall, Mich. Location Set to Open as MI Thrift in Fall 2025

The newly rebranded store—now called MI Thrift—introduces a fresh identity that reflects the heart of the Michigan communities it serves. Pronounced “My Thrift,” the name is a playful nod to both the state and the personal connection shoppers often feel as they discover one-of-a-kind treasures that make a house a home.

“We want MI Thrift to feel like it’s yours—because it is,” said Macfarlane. “Every item has a story, and every purchase helps write a new one as proceeds from MI Thrift directly support life-changing programs for Michigan veterans; including suicide prevention, housing, family services, and other critical resources that offer hope, stability, and a path forward.”

The MI Thrift logo will include the phrase “by Volunteers of America Michigan” to honor the nonprofit’s legacy and ensure brand continuity. This pilot location in Marshall also offers an opportunity to evaluate the refreshed branding and how it resonates with shoppers across the state.

MI Thrift will offer:

  • Thousands of new items daily, including clothing, housewares, furniture, books, linens, jewelry, collectibles, and more
  • A vibrant, family-friendly shopping experience with games for kids, food, and live entertainment
