These Michigan Areas Earn the Most for Tutoring Nationally

  • New data has revealed the metro areas earning the most money for tutoring, with Casper, Wyoming, taking the top spot.
  • Cheyenne, Wyoming, was identified as earning the second most for tutoring, with the Southern Ohio nonmetropolitan area following in third.
  • The research analyzed the average wage for tutors, employment rate, and concentration of jobs in each area to produce the ranking.

Whether it’s a side hustle for students or a full-time career, tutoring can be a relatively lucrative money-maker for many people. However, certain cities are better for tutoring than others, with certain locations making ideal hotspots for tutors to work from or relocate to due to their earning potential.

Private education recruitment agency Find a Super Tutor investigated the metro areas earning the most for tutoring according to 2023 data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The research analyzed three factors consisting of the annual median wage for tutors, the employment rate for tutors, and the concentration of tutoring jobs in each area. A score out of 10 was assigned to each category, from which an overall index score was calculated to determine the ranking.

Taking the top spot was Casper, Wyoming, with a total score of 8.91 out of 10. The metro area had the highest median salary for tutors, earning an average of $99,590 per year. It had the 11th highest tutoring employment rate, with 2.71 jobs per 1,000. It also had the 11th highest location quotient with 2.39, deeming it one of the areas with the highest job concentration for tutors.

Following in second was Cheyenne, Wyoming, with an overall score of 8.69 out of 10.

The area boasted an annual median tutoring wage of $64,450, placing it sixth highest in this category. It had the eighth highest employment rate with 2.95 jobs per 1,000, and its job concentration was also high, with a location quotient of 2.60.

Southern Ohio nonmetropolitan area ranked third, with a score of 8.36 out of 10, and the fifth-highest annual average salary at $64,840. Its employment rate was 2.46 jobs per 1,000, whereas the location quotient was 2.17, placing the area at 16th for these two categories.

In fourth was El Centro, California, with an index score of 8.26 out of 10. It had the 69th highest annual median wage of $46,750. However, it placed fourth for job concentration and employment rate, with a location quotient of 4.50, and 3.90 per 1,000 jobs.

Rounding out the top five was Ann Arbor, Michigan,

with a total score of 8.14 out of 10. The metro area had the highest employment rate and job concentration of any city, with 8.45 tutoring jobs per 1,000 and a location quotient of 7.46. However, it had the lowest average salary of any area in the top 10, with tutors earning just $35,870 per year.

Placing sixth was Lawton, Oklahoma, with an overall score of 8.01 out of 10. It had the 12th highest annual median wage, with tutors expecting to earn $60,350. <span class=”TextRun MacChrom
