Weddings are supposed to be joyous occasions, mainly for the couple in question, but also for their family and friends. But they’re also stressful, and guests can either make or break a wedding. One of the most loving things you can do for the couple and the family is to try to be a good guest.

This isn’t to say that you can’t have fun, but there are a few guidelines you can follow to be as helpful as possible.

RSVP Quickly

When you receive your wedding invitation, a very common thing to do might be to go “oh yes, I’ll attend” to yourself, then put the invitation somewhere safe without actually telling the bride and groom about your plans. Ideally, you should respond as quickly as possible and use the method they ask for.

As well as giving the bride and groom an accurate number of who will be attending, the RSVP might also let them know about your dietary requirements and, if there are menu options, what you’d prefer. The invitation gives other information about the wedding, like the location, dress code, and time.

Wedding Gifts

Another thing the wedding invitation might include is how the couple would like to receive gifts. Gifts are a very common part of the wedding, and while they aren’t required to attend, it’s nice to bring something.

Often, people use a wedding registry, which prevents them from getting twelve toasters from different family members. Some people might be a bit more relaxed, so you can be more creative with your wedding gift. Or they might even ask for money or gift cards. Rather than seeing this as rude, consider that this is a good way for everyone to give something the bride and groom will appreciate, without having to spend a lot of money.

Dress Accordingly

Ideally, you should follow the dress code of the invitation. If there isn’t a code stipulated or you haven’t been told, assume that the dress code leans on the formal side. This is a chance to dress up. It’s the perfect opportunity to shop for sexy guest wedding dresses that you probably can’t wear on any other occasion. As a general rule, avoid wearing white to a wedding, and if the wedding customs follow a culture you don’t know, then do a bit of research in advance or ask about what’s expected.

This means that ladies should wear formal or semi-formal clothes; most dresses will work perfectly, but certainly don’t shy away from pants and a nice top or a trouser-suit if you prefer. Make sure your hair and makeup are on point, you want to look nice but comfortable, and don’t forget your nails. If you’re worried about nails, follow some nail care tips before the wedding.

Gentlemen can’t go wrong with a suit, but you don’t necessarily have to go the full suit and tie route. Smart trousers and a shirt with a blazer can work very well.

During the Wedding

During the wedding, try to follow some basic etiquette. It’s not too difficult to behave properly at a wedding, simply try to avoid drinking too much and don’t block the photographer during the bigger moments of the ceremony.

Mingle if possible so you can meet new people, and bear in mind that the bride and groom will probably be swamped, so try not to crowd them.

Most of all, have a great time.
