Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit Launches “1,000 Beds Challenge” to Raise $250,000 This Holiday Season to Purchase Twin Mattresses, Foundations, Pillows and Bedding for Local Children Experiencing Bed Poverty!

Nonprofit is teaming up with Serta Restokraft Mattress Company and ABC Warehouse on charitable initiative!

PONTIAC, MI (November 12025) – Metro Detroit’s best bedtime story this holiday season is the “1,000 Beds Challenge” fundraiser created by the Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit to help tackle the bed poverty crisis in Oakland, Wayne and Macomb Counties where approximately 20,000 children don’t have a bed of their own. The 57-year-old nonprofit organization is hoping to raise $250,000 through December 31 which will supply 1,000 new bed sets to local children who go to sleep each night in a family member’s bed, on a sofa, or on the floor. Individuals, families, companies, coworkers, schools and classrooms, and faith groups and foundations are invited to make an impact by donating any amount at https://www.furniture-bank.org/. A new twin mattress, foundation, pillow and bedding for one child costs $250.

“It’s heartbreaking that so many children and teens in our community don’t have a bed which represents so much more than a piece of furniture; it offers safety, comfort, privacy and dignity,” said Diane Charles, president and CEO of the Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit. “Studies show that when a child has their own bed, they sleep, learn and behave better. My biggest dream this holiday season is to give one thousand youngsters the gift of sleep.”

Michigan’s Serta Restokraft Mattress Company,

has joined the “1,000 Beds Challenge” and will donate one twin mattress for every nine that are funded. Family-owned and operated ABC Warehouse is also partnering with the Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit, promoting the initiative to all of its customers and donating 100 percent of purchases of its custom “Cozy Up for a Cause” holiday-themed loungewear for men, women, children and infants sold on its online merch store.

“At ABC Warehouse, our brand stands for much more than great deals; it stands for creating a better home life and good night’s sleep is foundational to that,” said Jessica Lajcaj, director of advertising and marketing. “Partnering with the Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit allows ABC Warehouse to extend our commitment to value and service directly into the community, giving children the comfortable, restful nights they need to thrive.”

Radio station 99.5 WYCD FM, the Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit’s media partner, will be encouraging listeners to donate to the “1,000 Beds Challenge” starting Friday, November 14, which is National Family Pajama Day.
