A new study highlighted that Michigan has the highest likelihood of twin births nationwide this holiday season.
The research by the Birth Injury Lawyers Group analyzed five years of state-level birth data from the March of Dimes, calculating the average number of twin births per 1,000 live births from 2019 to 2023. States were then ranked from highest to lowest, offering a snapshot of where twin deliveries are most common.
The national average across the five years is 31.62 twin births per 1,000 live births. How does Michigan compare?
According to the research, Michigan ranks first with an average of 35.8 twin births per 1,000 Live Births, 13.2% higher than the national average of 31.62 twin births per 1,000 Live Births. Between 2019 and 2023, the Great Lake State recorded its highest rate in 2019 (37) and its lowest in 2020 (35).
Looking at the study, a spokesperson from Birth Injury Lawyers Group commented:
“Michigan’s consistently elevated twin birth rates suggest a long-standing demographic pattern. The state’s stability across five years indicates that environmental, genetic, or maternal age factors may be contributing at higher levels than in other regions.”

Methodology
Twin birth data were sourced from the March of Dimes PeriStats database, analyzing annual state-level rates of twin births per 1,000 live births from 2019 to 2023. For each state, a five-year average was calculated and compared against the national average of 31.62 twin births per 1,000 live births. States were ranked from highest to lowest to identify those with the greatest likelihood of twin births.
