Another record-breaking the December travel season is on the horizon, and with it comes the scramble for flights, hotel rooms, and rental cars, especially for last-minute traveler planners. But what does procrastination really cost during one of the busiest travel periods of the year?

InsureMyTrip researchers analyzed how pricing surges in the days leading up to major December holidays and what travelers can do to avoid the steepest costs and biggest hassles.

The Cost of Procrastination

  • Flights: Travelers who book flights less than two weeks before Christmas pay an average of 25–35% more.
  • Hotels: Hotel rates for the Christmas–New Year’s period rise 20–40% in the final two weeks of December, driven by limited availability in major cities and winter-sun destinations.
  • Rental Cars: Rental car prices increase up to 50% for reservations made within one week of Christmas or New Year’s, especially in airport-adjacent locations.

Beyond rising prices, last-minute planners face risks such as overbooked flights, tight connections, sold-out hotels, and weather-related disruptions.

5 Tips to Save – Even When Booking Late

For travelers still scrambling to finalize holiday plans, the experts at InsureMyTrip recommend the following:

  1. Fly on Less-Popular Days: Traveling on Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, or mid-week can significantly reduce airfare and crowds.
  2. Search Alternate Airports or Nearby Cities: Regional airports often have more availability and lower fares.
  3. Take Advantage of Last-Minute Deals: Some travel apps offer same-day or next-day discounts on flights and hotel rooms.
  4. Prepare for Delays & Disruptions: Pack essentials in carry-ons, leave buffer time for connections, and confirm all reservations ahead of travel.
  5. Consider Travel Insurance: Even last-minute travelers can secure important protections, including:
    • Trip Cancellation/Interruption
    • Emergency Medical Coverage
    • Weather Delay*
    • Baggage Loss/Delay
