Michigan’s Most Googled Vacation Destinations Revealed: Which Countries do Residents Want to Visit the Most?

• Japan and Italy rank second and third, with 4,533 and 4,239 average monthly searches, respectively.

A new study has revealed the countries Michigan residents most want to visit for their next vacation, with Mexico ranking number one.

The study, conducted by student travel company Rustic Pathways, analyzed the average number of monthly Google searches for terms related to vacations in over 200 popular destinations, such as ‘flights to Japan’ and ‘Italy vacation,’ to determine which countries people in Michigan are most eager to visit.

The top ten most searched travel destinations in Michigan

Mexico vacation terms are searched an average of 5,411 times per month in the state and 296,937 nationally. It is the number one most searched vacation destination in the US, which is likely due to how close it is to the US, as well as its relatively low costs. Cancun is Mexico’s most popular spot, with 106,794 average monthly searches for vacations in the city across the US.

Searches for terms related to a vacation in Japan average 4,533 per month in the state and 251,497 nationwide. Japan ranks second overall in the US, making it the most popular long-haul destination among the top-ranking countries. Japan’s most popular location is Tokyo, with an average monthly search volume of 70,770 nationally.

Terms related to vacations in Italy have an average monthly search volume of 4,239 within the state and 183,926 across the US. It appears in the top three countries in every single state, making it the most popular European destination. Overall, Italy ranks third nationally, with 59,719 average monthly searches for Rome alone.Searches for vacations in Greece reach a monthly average of 3,044 in the state and 123,936 nationally. s in the top five countries in 49 states, highlighting the huge popularity of European vacations. The most popular Greek destination among Americans is Athens, with 26,167 average monthly searches.

Monthly searches for vacations in Canada average 2,966 in the state, as well as 118,525 in the US. It places fifth nationally, with Toronto searches alone averaging 38,703.

Terms related to visiting the United Kingdom reach an average of 2,443 monthly Google searches statewide and 115,653 nationwide. Overall, the United Kingdom ranks sixth in the US, appearing in the top ten across 48 states. London is the most searched city, with 82,488 average monthly searches in the US.

Thailand vacations are searched an average of 2,433 times per month in the state and 104,816 across the US. It ranks eighth nationally, with searches for Bangkok alone reaching a monthly average of 25,678.

Costa Rica vacations are searched an average of 2,398 times per month in the state, as well as 115,258 across the US. It places seventh nationally, with its most popular location being San José, reaching a monthly average search volume of 9,000.

Ireland vacations have an average monthly search volume of 2,168 in the state and 75,642 nationwide. Ireland takes the 12th position nationally, with Dublin being its most popular location, reaching 24,215 average monthly searches.

France is next, with monthly searches for vacations here averaging 2,163 statewide and 103,463 nationwide. France comes in at number nine across the US, and terms specifically related to vacations in Paris reach a monthly average of 72,014.

“There is a huge range of countries in the ranking, but there is a clear theme of European destinations in the list, despite how far they are from the US, highlighting how interested Americans are in European culture. At the same time, more accessible destinations like Mexico and Canada are high up in the rankings, which is most likely because of their shorter travel times and more affordable costs.

“The data shows that the most searched spots within these countries tend to be their capital cities, such as Tokyo and Rome. It’s likely that these are so popular because they generally have more landmarks and accommodation options to offer, making them a good starting point for travelers planning a trip.

Methodology:

A seed list of over 200 popular vacation destinations was used in the analysis. For each destination, Google Keyword Planner was used to find the average monthly search volume for the keywords ‘flights to [destination],’ ‘[destination] vacation,’ ‘[destination] vacation deals,’ ‘[destination] flight deals,’ ‘book hotel in [destination],’ ‘hotel price in [destination],’ ‘Airbnb in [destination],’ and ‘best time to visit [destination],’ to determine the most popular vacation destinations both on a state and national level.
