Michigan Ranks #7 Among the Worst States for Unwanted Spam Calls

According to a new study by WellPCB, an ISO-certified global leader in electronic manufacturing services (EMS) and PCB assembly, Michigan claimed the number seven spot on the national list, outpacing the vast majority of the country in official government reports and online frustration. The study analyzed formal complaint data from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) alongside Google search volumes for the past year to determine which states are bearing the brunt of the epidemic.

Key findings for Michigan:

• Michigan is the #7 most spam-called state in the U.S., earning a massive overall spam score (71.27) out of all 50 states.

• A Flood of Complaints: Michiganders filed a staggering 844 official FTC complaints per 100,000 residents in the last 12 months, making it one of the highest complaint rates in the nation.

• Desperate for a fix: Michigan residents search for spam-blocking solutions (e.g., “how to block spam calls”) at a high rate of 2,717 searches per 100k people.

• Michigan ranked just behind Nevada (#6) and Arkansas (#5). By contrast, Minnesota is the safest state (#50) with far fewer complaints and a fraction of Michigan’s search volume.

These unwanted calls range from minor nuisances, such as aggressive telemarketing, to serious fraud attempts, including fake car warranty renewals, IRS imposter scams, and AI-powered voice cloning. The financial toll on the state is steep; despite aggressive multistate litigation efforts and warnings to providers, local authorities continually warn residents about thousands of dollars lost to these sophisticated phone fraudsters.

How Michiganders can protect themselves

Zhao recommends using carrier-level spam-blocking apps provided by cell phone companies, silencing unknown callers in device settings, and never sharing personal or financial information with an unsolicited caller. Furthermore, residents are encouraged to continue using the National Do Not Call Registry and to report suspicious calls to the FTC and the Michigan Department of Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Team to help authorities track and prosecute major scam rings.

Methodology

To determine the most spam-called states, this study analyzed Jan-Dec 2025 data from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Google Keyword Planner, calculating metrics per 100,000 residents for accurate state-by-state comparison. The final rankings are based on a percent-ranked score that weights official FTC consumer complaints at 70% and local search volume for spam-related keywords (like “how to block spam calls”) at 30%.
