Research shows that 57% of Gen Z Americans now have a side hustle.
Gesher Human Services, one of the largest human service agencies in metro Detroit, will be offering a free virtual workshop on July 13 at 10 a.m. called The World of Side Hustles. The program is aimed at Michiganders who might be between jobs, simply looking to boost their earnings or looking for a financial path to explore their creativity. According to Harris Poll research, 57% of gen Z Americans (born 1997-2012) now have a side hustle; this compares with 21% among boomers (born 1946-1964). The Guardian newspaper recently wrote: “Instead of following in their parents’ footsteps, Gen Z is reshaping the definition of professional success, with many embracing “career minimalism” – treating day jobs as financial anchors while channeling ambition into side hustles and off-the-clock pursuits.”
With an unstable employment future and low barriers to entry for side hustles,
the appeal of side hustles is undeniable and become more common, but some Michiganders may need guidance on how to take this step towards greater financial stability.
Gesher’s Senior Director of Workforce Development Jason Charnas said that there are many skills that job seekers may have outside their professional setting that are available for making extra income. “Whether it is an artistic skill, practical skill or an opportunity to offer a service, getting your name out in the community is always going to be the first step,” he said. “That might be through traditional networking, using LinkedIn or being aware of apps which can facilitate that reach to customers for you.”
The July 13 workshop will:
- Leverage apps such as Upwork and Fiverr to maximize opportunities for freelancing
- Show how to promote services via various social media channels, mainly LinkedIn posts/updating their LinkedIn profile
- Provide a brief overview of additional services such as Coursera, Google Career Certificates and Microsoft Learning to learn new skills
- Give guidance on how to build a professional portfolio
