Did you know that today is National Sunglasses Day?  In celebration, don’t forget to sport your UV protection shades and guess what?  Your kids should be wearing them too.  I just recently learned some very important information regarding what sun can do to the eyes over time.  Since learning this information, I am determined to help spread the word about the importance of wearing proper eye protection.  Just like skin, eyes can become sunburned too and cause irreversible damage in the long run.

Dr. Dora Adamopoulos, a medical advisor to The Vision Council, states that “it is very important to protect your child’s eyes from eye damage.”  Here is why:

  • Infants and children receive 3 times the annual adult does of UV radiation and their eyes are more vulnerable to UV.
  • 25% of an individual’s lifetime exposure to UV occurs before age 18.
  • The number of women under 40 with basal cell carcinoma more than doubled since 1975.
  • The first sign of cataracts can emerge in the 40’s and 50’s.
  • By the age of 60 and over, risk of age-related macular degeneration is at its highest and cataracts are commonly reported.

As you know, children love playing outdoors.  Not only is it fun, it’s also important for their overall health and well-being, right?  Even if you apply sunscreen every time your child goes outdoors, it’s not enough.  Their eyes also need protection.  What are some symptoms indicating an early problem?

  • Bloodshot Eyes
  • Swollen Eyes
  • Hypersensitivity to Light

What can you do to protect your child’s eyes? What should you look for when purchasing sunglasses?  Check out this parents guide for more details.  Click link below:

My tween daughter is currently in a place where she thinks that sunglasses look absolutely ridiculous on her face.  We are getting ready to go on vacation that involves a lot of sun, and knowing what I know now, my children must wear sunglasses outdoors at all times.  Even if it’s cloudy, the UV rays can still cause damage.  We will be going on a shopping trip to search for the proper sunglasses, but also super cool for tweens.  Hopefully this will help.  My preschooler will be wearing her Kidz Banz sunglasses that I received in my swag bag.  I will be wearing my new ESPRIT sunglasses I received in the bag as well.  Hubby is set with his proper eyewear.  I just need to go shopping for two kids.  Not too shabby.  I am thankful that I am pretty adamant about wearing sunglasses.  I just need this persistence with my kids to protect their precious eyes.
