We’ve all heard the saying, “boys will be boys” in their actions and so that may be true for some families in their upbringing for their typical boys (which some parents want…but not all of us) … but digging deeper, there are many principles our boys need to be taught to be honorable, courageous and compassionate and I think Heather Haupt hit a home run with her new book Knights in Training in sharing those principles with us.

Picture this….raising your boys to be a true Knight.  May sound silly at first and even comical, BUT Haupt did just that with her three boys.  She based their rearing on the Knights’ Code of Chivalry which outlines ten character-building codes that teach boys the importance of respecting women, pursuing excellence, loving God, and standing against injustice.  I would say quite a feat as culture now depicts boys as rude and crude….and unfortunately, acceptable.

In this book, Haupt gives an accessible and much-needed guide to parents to learn the importance of:

  • Creating a micro-culture that mirrors their values
  • Mindful media consumption (i.e. why you don’t want your sons watching Frozen!)
  • Play weapons and how rules for engagement teaches boys courtesy
  • The essential role of faith and its impact on our actions, our place in the world, and our ability to honor the other
  • Discouraging potty humor – even if it promotes reading
  • Learning the art of disagreeing

Haupt also has Appendices in the back of the book that has very useful resources, for example..further reading material (age appropriate) and also chore list by age.

For those moms and dads wanting to raise their boys to be true gentlemen, this is the book for you.  I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and was writing down notes regarding areas that we (as a family) need to work on with my seven-year old son.  Also, after reading this book, I have a list of books I want to read to my son.

Knights in Training – Ten Principles for Raising Honorable, Courageous, and Compassionate Boys can be purchased at Amazon and Barnes & Nobles.  Father’s Day is coming up and this may be the perfect gift for the honorable Dad!
