Depression is a terrible illness that can cause huge issues in your life. Some symptoms are relatively easy to spot, and most of us can recognize those feelings of deep, deep sadness and hopelessness.
However, some symptoms are much less likely to be associated with depression which is why it’s important to know what they are so that you can make the link if need be and get help from the Eva Carlston Academy.
Putting on weight can be a big sign that something is wrong. Depression can cause some people to overeat, taking comfort in food that they can’t find elsewhere. Comfort food that has good memories associated with it raises the serotonin levels in the brain, but those kinds of foods tend to be high in fat and calories. This, combined with the fact that if you have depression, you may not feel like going out and exercising, means that it’s easy to gain weight.
Conversely, sometimes one of the symptoms of depression can be weight loss. A major loss in appetite or the lack of impetus to do any shopping or cooking can mean that you lose weight rather than put it on. Too much weight loss can have a seriously detrimental effect on your health and can even be fatal if not dealt with.
Many people who suffer from depression also suffer from chronic pain – the figure sits at about seventy-five percent. The pain tends to be focused in the neck and back, although it can be anywhere. This is thought to be due to all the tension within the body thanks to its negative state. Those with depression find it hard to relax and switch off, so the body is always in a ‘fight or flight’ mode. This causes the muscles and joints to be tense, and over time this causes pain.
Loss Of Libido
Not being interested in sex with your spouse anymore is a big sign that you might be suffering from depression. Sex is good for you, boosting your immune system and burning calories, amongst other things. It’s also good for your mood as it produces serotonin, the happy hormone.
Even if you know all of this and still don’t want to do it, your depression could be more serious than you thought. Of course, loss of libido doesn’t automatically mean you are depressed; there are other reasons. One of these is not feeling confident about your body.
If you find that the most minor thing causes you to become angry and that you are much more irritable for most of the time, then you might be suffering from depression. When you’re feeling negative, it’s much easier for more negativity to be found.
The positive things that happen don’t register as much. This kind of temper may not have a particular physical impact on you, but it can cause permanent damage to your relationships and make you feel guilty once you’ve lashed out, and that’s not good for your mental health.
