Our self-esteem naturally fluctuates during different periods of our lives – as it is something that a variety of both internal and external factors can impact. However, you must be able to love the skin you are in, especially as a parent.

After all, the way you speak about your appearance will impact your child’s own perception of beauty and, in turn, the way they feel about themselves. Of course, being able to love your reflection is easier said than done, especially when you consider the fact that “nearly two-thirds (63%) of new moms say their self-esteem decreased after becoming a parent.” After all, between sleepless nights and the general stress of raising children, it can be hard to nail down some time for your skincare routine!

With that in mind, here are some simple tips you can follow to bring forth your natural glow and boost your confidence!

Know your skin type.

One of the easiest ways to begin to take better care of your skin is by figuring out what type of skin you have. This way, you can ensure the skincare products you are using are suitable and will not lead to further issues or complications.

The most common skin types include:

  • Oily skin. Skin that produces excess sebum (oil).
  • Dry skin. Skin that lacks moisture.
  • Combination skin. Skin with both oily and dry areas.

Be aware of bad habits.

While some skincare complaints are linked to genetics, such as acne and eczema, others are a direct response to our lifestyle. This means that some of your regular habits could be harming your skin. For example, drinking alcohol can dehydrate your skin, leading to dry, dull-looking skin that struggles to retain moisture and elasticity.

Smoking can also impact your body’s production of collagen, a protein that is responsible for keeping your skin looking smooth and supple. As such, those who smoke regularly may be more likely to develop premature wrinkles, meaning now is the perfect time to put that cigarette down for good. After all, this can bring forth a range of health benefits, too!

Put together a skincare routine.

Putting together a skincare routine is another great way to maintain a natural, youthful glow. While your routine will vary depending on your skin type (as you may need to incorporate specialist products), a basic routine that you may wish to follow should include the following steps:

  • Cleansing
  • Toning
  • Moisturizing
  • Applying SPF.

In any case, it’s essential that you do not overcomplicate your routine – especially as it’s something you’ll have to complete twice a day (in the morning and evening). If it is overly long, you’re less likely to be consistent in your approach, which means you won’t see the best results. Furthermore, most parents don’t have the time for a 20+ step skincare routine!

Consider cosmetic surgery.

There are many joys associated with aging. You become wiser, and things that once used to bother you no longer seem that important. You also get to watch your children and your family grow. However, many people are unhappy with the ways in which aging changes their face and skin.

As a result, if you’re worried about wrinkles, you may want to look into cosmetic surgery. For example, the work that a facelift specialist performs can help to reduce the appearance or severity of wrinkles by targeting sagging or loose skin and other similar complaints. As a result, this can be a great way to restore your confidence in your appearance.

Always wear SPF.

When spending time outdoors, it’s crucial that you know how to protect your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays. This is because they can otherwise penetrate the outer layers of your skin, damaging the elastin and collagen fibers that help keep your skin looking smooth and supple. One of the easiest ways to protect yourself in this regard is applying SPF products on a daily basis – even when it doesn’t look as though the sun is shining.

However, while sunbathing and tanning may be fun, you should also avoid prolonged sun exposure. This is because it is often one of the key causes of premature aging – meaning you should spend some time in the shade!

Follow a nutritious diet.

While you may already have a wealth of skincare products on your bathroom shelf, it’s important to note that nutrition should also be part of your skincare routine. This is because the food you consume can also impact your skin’s health. For example, if you are not getting the relevant nutrients and vitamins, you’re impacting your skin’s ability to heal and regenerate new cells, which will damage your complexion.  Furthermore, eating foods rich in antioxidants can help flush toxins from your system, which can again help your skin stay in top condition.

Get plenty of sleep.

A good night’s sleep may seem elusive and impossible to achieve – especially for new parents. However, each time we get some sleep, our body begins to heal. For example, while sleeping, your body produces more collagen while also removing toxins. This is why a lack of sleep shows in our skin just as much as it does in our energy levels.

As a result, if you’re looking to boost your confidence, you should also try to get more sleep. Fortunately, there are many ways in which you could make this possible. For example, you should ensure that you have a consistent nighttime routine where you get into bed at the same time each evening. Over time, your body and mind will naturally begin to tire at this time, making it easier to drift off. However, you should also ensure that you avoid using your phone for some time before drifting off, as this can otherwise keep you awake as you aren’t giving yourself time to properly switch off and decompress. Remember, you don’t have to spend hours scrolling through social media at night – your phone will still be there in the morning!
