A new study has revealed that Michigan teachers have, on average, the eighth-most years of experience in the U.S.

The research, conducted by Radius.ac,

an AI lesson generator, analyzed data from the National Teacher and Principal Survey to determine which states have teachers with the most experience in the job.

Rhode Island has the most experienced teachers, with an average of 16.9 years in the classroom, 16.55% above the national average.

Maine ranks second among states with the most experienced teachers, with an average of 16.1 years11.03% above the national average. Maine teachers show strong experience distribution, with 51.2% having 15 or more years of teaching experience.

New Hampshire has the third most experienced teaching workforce with an average of 15.9 years9.66% above the national average. The state has a solid base of veteran teachers, with 52% having 15 or more years of experience.

Ohio ranks fourth with teachers averaging 15.7 years of experience, 8.28% above the national average. Ohio teachers show impressive longevity, with 52.4% having taught for 15 or more years.

Connecticut and Pennsylvania tie for fifth place among states with the most experienced teachers, both with an average of 15.6 years7.59% above the national average. Pennsylvania has a particularly low percentage of new teachers at just 6.7% with three years or less total teaching experience.

Nebraska holds the seventh position with teachers averaging 15.5 years of experience, 6.90% above the national average. Nebraska teachers show good stability with 23.5% having spent 15 or more years at their current school.

Michigan ranks eighth with teachers averaging 15.4 years of experience,

6.21% above the national average. The Great Lakes state has 53.8% of teachers with 15 or more years of total teaching experience.

New York and Oklahoma tie for ninth place with teachers averaging 15.3 years of experience, 5.52% above the national average. New York has the second-lowest percentage of new teachers at 7.5% with three years or less experience, while Oklahoma has one of the highest at 18.1%.

A notable pattern is that seven out of 10 states with the most experienced teachers voted Democratic in the 2024 election.

The data also reveals interesting patterns about teacher retention. Nevada has the highest percentage of teachers new to their schools, with 51.1% having taught at their current institution for three years or less.

On the opposite end, New York has the highest percentage of teachers who have stayed at the same school for 15 years or more at 35.4%, followed by New Jersey at 31.9% and New Hampshire at 32.6%.

Gadi Kovler, CEO of Radius.ac, commented on the findings:

“These numbers tell an important story about our education system. States with less experienced teachers face unique challenges that impact student learning. The high percentages of teachers with three years or less at their current schools in states like Nevada and Arizona point to significant turnover issues that need addressing.

“Experience matters in the classroom. Teachers build skills over time that help them better meet student needs and handle classroom challenges. States need to focus on retention strategies that keep talented educators in the profession longer.

“The political divide in these results raises questions about education funding and priorities in different states. The data suggests Republican-leaning states may need to examine their teacher retention policies and compensation structures.”

The study also found that the national average for teacher experience is 14.5 years, with 46.9% of teachers having 15 or more years of experience. Across the country, 37.9% of teachers have been at their current school for three years or less.

The U.S. National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) provides data from the National Teacher and Principal Survey (NTPS). The most recent survey (2020/21) data was analyzed to determine which states have the teachers with the least experience on the job. Around 9,900 public schools are included in the sample, with about 68,300 teachers total.

The states have been ranked by average years spent teaching for teachers in each state, and the state with the least experienced teachers has been ranked first, descending.

The data covers public K-12 schools. Elementary, middle and secondary teachers analyzed, the data does not include special needs education or vocational teaching.
