Nearly 300 children to select free clothing, school supplies, books and more at in-person store; an additional 600 children to be provided with clothing and supplies via 19 agencies.

 What:

The National Council of Jewish Women, Michigan (NCJW|MI), a social advocacy and grassroots volunteer organization operating in metro Detroit for 134 years, is organizing an in-person Back 2 School store for nearly 300 low-income Detroit children. They will be able to shop for winter coats, hats, mittens, long-sleeved shirts, sweatshirts, underwear, socks, pants or leggings, books, school supplies, toothbrush and toothpaste. Each child will be teamed with an NCJW|MI volunteer who will act as a personal shopper, ensuring they get the correct size clothes. Prior to COVID-19, 900 children were able to attend the event but since the pandemic, NCJW|MI has adapted the Back 2 School store to a hybrid model. This year approximately 300 children will attend the in-person event; then on August 6, an additional 600 children will be provided with clothing and school supplies from NCJW|MI through social service agencies.

When:

 Sunday August 3 from 11 a.m. to 3.30 p.m.

Why:

NCJW|MI is organizing the pop-up store for Detroit children who have been identified by 19 partner social service agencies as needing a helping hand. Approximately $180 provides clothing and school supplies for a child. Some money comes from NCJW|MI fundraising efforts and some from corporate donors and charitable grants.
