Fiber internet is great! There is no doubt about that, and you might have already heard this opinion.

But is this exactly what you need?

While the term gets thrown around pretty frequently, nobody talks about the use cases in which it is perfect, and most importantly, the premium price of fiber internet.

On the flip side, cable internet is more widely available and, in some cases, plans from top providers like Spectrum, Xfinity, and Cox are more affordable.

Anyway, what should you choose? The best performance or affordability?

Let me help you choose wisely as we take a look at the ideal use cases for each connection type, starting with the cable internet:

Ideal Use Cases for Cable Internet

Please keep in mind that there might be an overlap between the use cases, because in the end, they both are eventually broadband internet. So, here you go:

Work From Home

The first use case that comes to my mind for the cable internet is work from home. Why? Let me explain.

What do you need while working from home with an internet connection? You want it to be reliable, so that it doesn’t fail when you need it the most. Then there is download speed, so that you can surf the internet quickly, and upload speeds for your video meetings. Then there is affordability, so that it doesn’t break your bank.

If you’d ask me what one provider checks all of these boxes, I’d say Spectrum Internet. I have been using it to work from home since the pandemic. It offers affordable plans, network reliability, and bilingual Spectrum servicio al cliente specifically for Spanish speakers like myself (as well as English speakers) in the US. So, do check it out.

Casual Gaming

The next use case would be casual gaming, and cable internet is perfectly fine for that.

Well, what do we mean by casual gaming? Definitely not hardcore gaming, where you need the lowest of the lowest latency, and that too pretty stable.

Well, for most games, cable internet works. Whether it’s Roblox, Among US, Minecraft, Subway Surfers, etc., these games provide a seamless experience with this type of internet connection. However, for heavy games like Counter-Strike or Call of Duty, cable internet might trail behind fiber internet in these departments.

Don’t get me wrong, though, if you are playing these MMORPG games casually and you don’t care about the ranks and K/D ratio, then it is going to be just right.

Streaming Movies/Videos

I adore you if you are watching or have ever re-watched Breaking Bad. I love that show!

Anyway, the most important thing for a better streaming experience is stable internet speed, and lots of it. Yes, you do need high-speed internet if you want to watch a movie in the best quality possible. And by best, I mean 4K quality.

Does cable internet offer 4k streaming? Yes, it does pretty well. As I stated earlier, I have been using high-speed Spectrum Internet, which is basically a cable internet. I have yet to have any problems streaming 4K content on my home internet.

So, if that’s what you do a lot, you will be fine with cable internet.

Ideal Use Cases for Fiber Internet

It’s time to explore the use cases of fiber internet. So, let’s do it.

Hardcore Gaming

If you are a hardcore multiplayer gamer who comes clutch for your team, then fiber internet is perfect for you.

Because of the fiber optic cables that use light to transmit the data, fiber internet has the lowest latency of any type of internet.

In simple words, you will see your opponent’s move as soon as they make it. There will be no delay, and your reaction time will be quicker than most. If you want any of that, fiber internet fits your shoes perfectly. So, do get it.

In case you need a recommendation for fiber internet, Google Fiber is great, but it has limited availability. Kinetic is another fiber internet provider that has wider availability than Google Fiber, and is good.

Content Creation

Last but not least, if you are a content creator who loves making videos and presenting them on the platform of your choice, it is better to get fiber internet for faster upload speeds.

Let me tell you why: a friend of mine is a YouTuber. Once he is done making the video, he needs to upload the heavy video files to YouTube. If it weren’t for fiber internet, it might have taken him hours to upload just one video, and he actually used to struggle with that.

When he switched to fiber internet, he got a massive upgrade in the upload speed, and it became pretty simple for him to upload his content.

Now, at the conclusion of this post, I would say evaluate your usage, just as we’ve done above. If you need high performance in your online activities, go for fiber internet, but if you are a casual internet user, cable internet will be perfectly fine for you.
