A Guide to Staying Cozy During Chilly Family Outings

If you and your family are fans of the great outdoors, you’ve definitely experienced the magic that crisp winter air brings to an adventure. There’s something incredibly special about the bare trees, puffy clouds of your own breath, and rosy cheeks from playing in the cold.
Even if you’re more of a summer family, don’t let the chilly weather discourage you and your kids from getting out there and enjoying the colder days. There are plenty of things you can do to stay warm during those chilly family outings.
Embrace the Layers
The secret to outsmarting the cold weather is layering. Start with a snug thermal shirt and add a warm sweater or fleece on top. That oversized cotton hoodie you love? It’s perfect for this. Layering allows you to adjust your body temperature as it changes throughout the day. And remember, it’s not just about keeping your torso warm. Invest in good-quality thermal socks, and consider lined pants or thermals for your legs too.
Stay Dry to Stay Warm
Getting wet is a sure-fire way to feel cold, even if you’re bundled up like a North Pole explorer. A water-resistant or waterproof outer layer can make all the difference between a fun family outing and a frigid ordeal. This doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice style for function, though. There are plenty of attractive, water-resistant jackets and pants that can keep you dry and chic during your winter adventures.
Mind the Extremities
Mother always said, “If your feet are cold, put on a hat,” right? Your head, hands, and feet are the biggest culprits in body heat loss. Keep your noggin warm with a good-quality winter hat that covers your ears. Similarly, mittens are warmer than gloves, and boot insoles can add an extra layer of warmth for your feet. Don’t forget about scarves; they provide excellent protection for your neck and chin.
Smart Snacking
So, we’ve covered clothing, but did you know certain foods can aid in keeping you warm? Consuming hot drinks and meals that are high in fat or protein can actually help your body maintain its core temperature. Think about editing your picnic basket to include a thermos of hot soup, protein bars or some hearty sandwiches.
Choose the Right Gear
Naturally, if you’re planning to enjoy some physical outdoor activities, like skiing or ice skating, you’ll need the right gear to keep warm. Insulated boots, ski pants, and even hand and toe warmers can be lifesavers in extremely cold temperatures.
Embrace Indoor-Outdoor Venues
Last but not least, one great way to stay cozy during chilly family outings is to plan activities at venues that offer both indoor and outdoor experiences. That way, you can periodically escape the cold when needed. This could mean a day at a nature reserve with a heated visitor’s center, a winter festival with indoor food vendors, or a ski resort with warming huts.
Keeping warm doesn’t have to mean staying indoors. With some thoughtful planning and smart outfitting, your family can enjoy the great outdoors all year round. So, dust off those jackets, pull on some good boots, and step out into the crisp winter air. Winter is calling, and adventure awaits!
