8 Effective Tips On How to Become a Good Neighbor

All neighborhoods have their own personalities. Some are more open to socializing and street parties while some prefer to stay indoors and be alone all throughout the day. Regardless of the type of neighborhood you are in, there are still basic etiquettes and rules that you should follow to be a good neighbor.

Below are some of the basic tips and advice that can surely help you develop good and long-lasting relationships with your neighbors.

Be wary of the noise

Whether you live in an apartment complex, building or not, you must always respect the basic rules when it comes to making too much noise. If you are surrounded by families that are pretty quiet and conservative, then the noise that you can create must be on a minimal level. Always be mindful of your neighbors and think about them whenever you are about to blast something loud on your speakers. If you are more of a music person, you can do some soundproofing to make sure that the noise you create will stay indoors and won’t bother anyone around your apartment or home.

Observe and respect your neighbor’s personal space.

Respect their personal space at all times. Respect their privacy and as much as possible, mind your own business.

Return borrowed items immediately

Be mindful if you borrow anything. Return the item immediately after using it. If you break the item, pay to fix it or replace it.

Don’t gossip

Don’t be the neighborhood gossip. Don’t tell stories about your neighbor whether it’s true or not. Gossips kill the relationship.

Be mindful of your pets

Not everyone is fond of pets. Not everyone appreciates a dog or cat in their surroundings. Always keep an eye on your pet.

Warm greetings

Remember your neighbors during holidays and any other special occasions with a small greeting card or homemade gift. You’ll be surprised at how much they are going to appreciate it.

Always be friendly

If you don’t like what you see on your neighbor or what they do, don’t call the cops immediately (if it is not life-threatening). Instead, try talking with them in a nice and friendly way and tell them about your own feelings. Avoid any kind of misunderstanding at all costs.

Introduce yourself in a respectful way

If you are new to the community, say hi and hello to your new neighbors. You don’t need to drop on their doors immediately though. If you come across them on the hallway, door or elevator, a simple conversation is enough. Introduce yourself and let them know that you are a very friendly and approachable human.
