By Anita Ginsburg
A major storm can drastically affect both your home and your family. It can cause all sorts of damage, which, if serious enough, can really affect how your family functions on a daily basis. Fortunately, there are some things that you can do to get your family back to normal life after major storm damage to your home.
Make a List of What Needs to Be Done
There’s a good chance that everyone is feeling overwhelmed right now simply because there’s so much that needs to be done. You can alleviate some of the stress that you are feeling by making a list of everything that you need to do in order to get past this stressful time. This list will allow you to feel as if you have a plan as to what you need to accomplish so that you all can move on.
Talk to Your Insurance Company
Your home’s insurance policy should cover at least some of the damage, and in some cases, it might cover all of it. This is why you need to talk to your insurance company as soon as possible to find out whether or not you should submit a claim. By doing so, you will know exactly how much you will need to pay out-of-pocket. Additionally, these types of claims often have a time limit, so you need to call quickly to ensure you meet your deadlines.
Get Water Damage Mitigation
Odds are that you probably have water damage in your home that you need to address. This might come from small leaks in the roof, damaged pipes, a caved-in roof, or any of a number of other issues. While a bit of water seems like more of an annoyance than a danger, you need to get water damage mitigation taken care of quickly.
This will involve drying the interior of your home, removing furnishings and drywall, and disinfecting your home. By getting water damage mitigation promptly, you can lessen the likelihood of mold growing inside of your home and you lessen the likelihood and severity of structural damage.
Enjoy Some Family Time
This is a stressful time for you, your spouse, and your children. In addition to being stressed by the amount of work that needs to be done, your family may also feel unsafe or as if their stable home has been taken away. This stress and fear can manifest in fights, mood swings, tears, or even silence.
Having all of the damage repaired quickly will allow things to go back to normal as soon as possible and re-establish a feeling of security. However, you should also take time to plan some sort of activity with your family that will allow everyone to take their mind off of things and to just enjoy being together.
You could do things like going ice skating for a few hours or even going to a nearby town for just the weekend while work is being done on your house. Doing something fun together may be just what your family needs to lift everyone’s spirits during this trying time.
Storm damage can really change your life, and you may be wondering if things will ever get back to normal. Fortunately, there are some ways that you can deal with all of this major damage to your home and help your family get back to normal life as soon as possible.
