Gesher Human Services in Southfield offers program as financial pressures continue to impact older adults now seeking jobs.

Gesher Human Services, one of the largest human service agencies in metro Detroit, will be offering Recharge! a career development program for adults 45 years and older, on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon, Sept. 9-25. The program will be held at the nonprofit agency’s headquarters in Southfield (29699 Southfield Road) and is being offered to assist the increasing number of older workers wanting to reinvent their working lives, or in the case of retirees, get back into the workforce.

report by the Employee Benefit Research Institute looking at trends in the US labor force found that from 1981-2023, the share of the labor force of Americans ages 55 or older became increasingly larger. The greatest increase in the labor force share was attributed to those aged 65 to 69 years old.

“Financial pressures continue to be a big issue, with mature metro Detroiters reaching out to us for guidance on employment opportunities open to them,” explained career counselor Sherrie James. “Then there are other people who may have stopped working in their 50s or 60s and find they are lonely and miss the connections they enjoyed through working with colleagues.”

James said that the program will offer the opportunity for participants to:

  • Reconnect with their skills and interests
  • Refresh their resumes
  • Restore a believe in themselves during a time of transitions
  • Re-energize job searches

Recharge! provides a number of career assessments including a personality assessment,

an interest inventory and a skills assessment all aimed at ascertaining the best and most appropriate job prospects available to an individual.  The program requires registration and a $40 material fee, although scholarships are available to ensure there is no financial barrier to participating. For more information and to register contact Sherrie James sjames@geshermi.org or call 248.233.4472. One-on-one career counseling is also available at Gesher; contact employmenthelp@geshermi.org.
