About DonorsChoose
Founded in 2000, DonorsChoose.org is a nonprofit website where public school teachers describe specific educational projects for their students, and donors can choose the projects they want to support. After completing a project, the donor hears back from the classroom they supported in the form of photographs and student thank-you letters. To date, 88,000 public and charter schoolteachers have used the site to secure funding for $30.3 million in books, art supplies, technology, and other resources that their students need to learn. Through http://www.DonorsChoose.org, individuals from all walks of life have helped 1.8 million students from low-income families.

Here is additional information they would like for me to share with all Michigan moms today:

TAKEPART AND DONORSCHOOSE.ORG PARTNER ON ‘THE GREAT BACK-TO-SCHOOL CHALLENGE’ TO SUPPORT 19 U.S. CLASSROOMS

With Public School Teachers Spending Three Billion Dollars* of Their Own Money Annually on School Supplies, Help is Needed More than Ever Before LOS ANGELES, Sept 5, 2012 — TakePart, a leading source of socially relevant news, opinion and entertainment, and DonorsChoose.org, the online charity that connects individual “citizen philanthropists” with classrooms in need, today announced their ‘Great Back-to-School Challenge.’ This initiative shines a spotlight on nineteen dedicated teachers and their respective classroom projects. If funded these projects can make a big difference in educating hundreds of students this school year.

Kicking off September 4th and running through the end of the month, the projects picked for the campaign range from trombones for a music class, to garden supplies for an urban garden, to sensory tools for a special needs class.

This is not the first time that TakePart and Participant Media, its parent company, have partnered with DonorsChoose.org.  In 2010, the two companies worked together on “Take The Pledge,” an initiative benefiting 2.8 million students developed in connection with the release of Waiting for Superman, Participant Media’s award-winning documentary about the crisis of public education in the United States.

“DonorsChoose.org offers a platform for citizens to empower public school teachers in an easy and highly actionable way,” said Nichol Nelson, editorial director of TakePart. “We hope that this campaign will drive awareness of the issues facing the public school system, its teachers and its students, and ultimately activate the community to support a number of classrooms in need.”
“We partnered with TakePart because of their ability to engage large audiences around important issues like education and connect them to action” said Anna Doherty, senior marketing manager of DonorsChoose.org. Their consistent commitment to raising awareness of the challenges facing our public schools is evidenced in this creative back-to-school program.”

Individuals interested in contributing to the TakePart-sponsored classrooms can go to www.takepart.com/backtoschool from September 4 through September 30 to view the projects and make a donation.
